This university is one of the youngest universities in Ukraine. It holds the geographic location where Mykolaiv port craft school was formed upon the Emperor’s decree in 1862. Since then, there have been multiple educational institutions of various types. On December 10, 2008, Petro Mohyla State Humanities University was reorganized into Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University.
In 2009, the University has joined the European University Association and the Great Charter of Universities. This is the only institution among higher education institutions that represented Ukraine and its structure of teaching at the Talloires Network Leaders Conference (TNLC). This conference has comprised of more than 250 universities around the globe. The BSSU was the inaugurator of the Ukrainian public organization “Ukrainian Association of Universities” creation. In 2013, this university was ranked 44th and in 2014, it was ranked 43rd among the best universities in Ukraine. The accolades and achievements mentioned have facilitated the BSSU, to achieve the status of the national university on 14 June 2016, by the Decree of President Petro Poroshenko.
As more teachers and students arrived at the University from almost all regions of Kyiv and Ukraine, the university became more multicultural. International students have begun to study in this university as the departments were headed by renowned professors and doctors of science. The University has proceeded to open its own scientific schools, institutes, research centers, and specialized academic councils for dissertations. However, within no time the University began to outgrow itself in the scale of development. In fact, the University has become multidisciplinary and began to receive patients for treatment. Besides particular specialties, MSHU has expanded to incorporate bachelor's and master's degrees in Finance, Law, Computer Science, Environmental Protection and Sustainability, Instrument Engineering, and Computer Engineering. This is how the proposal to change the status of Petro Mohyla State Humanities University by the Ministry of Science and Education along with Regional State Administration was considered.
To provide education that meets global standards, any University must maintain strong and regular contacts with multiple international organizations and foreign universities. Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University invites leading international scholars to give lectures, hold workshops and seminars, and encourages expansion in practice of our teachers and students by accepting opportunities to study abroad.
The Students’ Board aims to coordinate the daily life of students, offers productive free-time activities, and also helps solve disputes.
The research work at this University is based on our national expertise, including Petro Mohyla’s philosophical concept. This is expressed in the natural combination of educational and scientific activities. Scientific research is carried out as per the program endorsed by the Academic Council and Rector.
Despite the young age of this University, it has become one of the most influential universities in the south-western region. It is the only institution falling under the classical category in the South of Ukraine. It combines national traditions (Liberal Arts Education) along with western educational technologies.
